England defender Joleon Lescott has completed his protracted move from Everton to Manchester City.

The 27-year-old defender has signed a five-year contract for a fee thought to be about £22m, taking City's summer spending to more than £120m.

The transfer brings to end the bitter wrangle between the two clubs, with Everton boss David Moyes accusing City of "disgusting" behaviour.

Lescott could make his City debut against Portsmouth on Sunday.

City boss Mark Hughes told the club's official website: "I am absolutely delighted to welcome Joleon to Manchester City.

"In bringing Joleon to the club I feel we have recruited a defender of the very highest quality. He can play in a number of defensive positions, and I'm positive he will make a significant impact for us."

Lescott, who is the second most expensive English defender after Rio Ferdinand, is expected to form a central defensive partnership with fellow new signing Kolo Toure.

It could also pave the way for club captain Richard Dunne's departure.

Dunne has been linked with a move to Aston Villa, while Moyes is reportedly keen to bring Sylvain Distin from Portsmouth as a replacement for Lescott.

The Everton boss was extremely resistant to the sale of Lescott, rejecting the defender's transfer request and turning down bids of £15m and £18m from City.

However, Moyes dropped the 27-year-old over his "poor attitude" following the opening day 6-1 defeat by Arsenal, and the sale of Lescott to City appeared inevitable after that.

Lescott joined Everton from Wolves for £5m in 2006, and the Midlands club are thought to have negotiated a sell-on fee.
